A large number of advanced and new technologies have been applied to the metro system in Shanghai. SMOC employs many world-class facilities in its system.
The imported German-made electric cars with large width and long length which are open at both ends are selected for Metro Line 1, 2, and 3. The rated capacity is 310 persons and the maximum capacity is 410 persons. The maximum operation speed is 80 km per hour and the average operation speed is 35 km per hour. At present, the shortest operation headway during rush hours is 2.75 minutes.

The telecommunications system consists of the transmission via optical fibers, program-controlled telephone network, wired broadcasting, closed-circuit television(CCTV), wireless telecommunications and other subsystems. The whole network is automatically monitored and managed via computers. The full frequency range for mobile telecommunications is covered inside the metro system.
The power supply system is classified into the 110KV main power substation, the 33kV traction substation ,the 10KV step-down substation and the 1500KV catenary. The SCADA remote control system is adopted in the monitoring for power supply, which can remotely sense, control and detect various substations within the system.

The Automatic Fare Collecting (AFC) System is adopted, and automatic coin-exchangers are also available. At present, contact-less “all-purpose tickets” for public transport and single tickets are most commonly-used metro tickets.
Clear-cut passenger guiding signs, convenient special elevators for the disabled and screens which are able to offer various types of real-time information with other humanized operation service facilities not only bring about convenience to passengers but also exalt the image of operation services.
